College isn’t all fun and games– Freshmen entering college still have that high school mentality until something forces them to be serious. It happens to us all but you need to know that college is more than fun. It’s about focusing and working toward your future.
Do your financial aid months before the deadline– I can’t argue this enough. Financial aid is the way to pay your school balance, so if you miss the deadline, you may not get any aid. That means you will have to take out private loans and pay out of pocket. I messed up on my aid when I was a freshmen and I never missed that deadline ever again. Don’t make my mistake.
Don’t be afraid of subsidized and unsubsidized loans– Loans are scary in general. No one wants to be in debt but, unless you have a rich family and they are paying your tuition, then you will have debt. These are the best loans because they give you a good amount of time after you graduate to pay them off. What you don’t want is “private loans”. These are loans that you have to payback immediately.
Examine the entire school before choosing– Picking a college can be so exciting but you want to pick the right school. You should look at the environment so that you can be comfortable, research the classes so that you know how they do things, look at the dorms so that you are safe, and more. You should also research the prices so that you can afford it. You don’t wanna be in too many loans.
Choose your major carefully– You can always change your major but one thing you should know is that, every time you change your major, you are adding more classes. More classes means more time backed up from your graduation date. I am a junior and I am just starting my new major. I’m not upset because I love these classes but I wish I started off with this major.
Remember that you will lose high school friends– It’s hard, I know. Everyone has dreams of going to college with there full friend groups but you have to remember that there are around 25,000 universities in the world. Not everyone wants to go to the same place. You also have to remember that you should not base a college off where your friends want to go.
College meal plans are expensive so pick wisely– Many universities offer different meal plans and others make you get the all access meal plan. You will get annoyed at those prices but you will end up paying it unless you are willing to fight it. I fought it and got it removed.
Stay positive and enjoy college– I know I said some scary things about college but there are many things to be happy about. You are gonna be on your own and get to start your life. Your life awaits.
